I learned these techniques out of necessity. After a decent launch of my adult life, two poor decisions impeded my ascent and I spent two and a half years homeless, living out of a Nissan Maxima. My toothbrush, deodorant, cologne, and dictionary sat in a clear, hard, plastic box in the trunk of my car. I kept my clothing on hangers in a $39 a month storage unit.

When I needed a better-than-average night’s sleep, I drove 90 miles to stay with my cousin’s wife for a few days, while he served his country on a ship in the middle of The Mediterranean. I still owned my own business—as opposed to still owning someone else’s—and had just enough mettle to keep it afloat as my self-esteem tanked.

I had to acknowledge these were the options delivered to me at this stage in life, yet I believed my choices could lead me out. I learned to view life as it is; not how I want it to be. I was down, but still gave of my time to local causes. As I endeavored to add to the good in the world, a funny thing happened; the more I gave to others, the more things improved for me. Walking in the middle of the road through an apartment complex, contemplating how to best use the few bucks I had to my name at the time, I had a serendipitous meeting...
